Lens-shift capability is this lens’s key differentiator. The shift ranges of ±56.5% horizontally and ±14.8% vertically allow the projector to be installed off the screen’s center axis, with lens shift bringing the image back into alignment without keystone correction. Keystone correction comes at a cost—each correction step sacrifices some effective pixels, causing text edges to appear soft. In professional installations, never use keystone correction when lens shift can solve the alignment; that is the minimum standard for image quality.
II. Calculating Installation Distance from Throw Ratio
The throw ratio is the ratio of installation distance to image width. This is a zoom lens (4.5–7:1), so each image size corresponds to a range of distances, and the lens can be focused at any point within that range during installation.
| Image Size | Image Width | Required Installation Distance |
|---|---|---|
| 100 inches | 2.15 m | approx. 9.67 – 15.05 m |
| 120 inches | 2.58 m | approx. 11.61 – 18.06 m |
| 150 inches | 3.22 m | approx. 14.51 – 22.57 m |
| 200 inches | 4.30 m | approx. 19.35 – 30.10 m |
The distances above are clear distances from the front of the lens to the screen and do not include clearance for rear cooling and cable connections. They are calculated for a 16:10 aspect ratio; actual distances are subject to on-site measurements and the manual.
Image quality differs at the two ends of the zoom range: toward the short-throw end, the image is brighter and the edges are slightly softer; toward the long-throw end, the edges are sharper and brightness is slightly lower. Where the installation environment allows, use the middle of the range. After installation, first find the sharpest setting on the focus ring, then fine-tune the lens shift—adjusting both variables at the same time makes precise alignment difficult.

OEM Replacement Lens Models
24 of these projector models can be fitted with OEM lenses. The corresponding throw ratio for each lens model is listed below for comparison with the OEM solution.
NEC OEM Lenses
| OEM Lens Model | Throw Ratio |
|---|---|
| NP-9LS12ZM1 | 1.2-1.72:1 |
| NP-9LS13ZM1 | 1.33-2.1:1 |
| NP-9LS16ZM1 | 1.62-2.7:1 |
| NP-9LS20ZM1 | 2.09-3.9:1 |
| NP-9LS40ZM1 | 4.07-6.34:1 |
The 4.5–7:1 throw ratio of the lens featured in this article is closest to that of the OEM NP-9LS40ZM1 (4.07-6.34:1), making the two options easy to compare directly.
Common Features Across These Models
The factory-standard lens throw ratios for the 25 models mostly fall under Depends on the lens. The 4.5–7:1 ratio of the lens in this article effectively adjusts the focal range, allowing the same projection distance to produce different image sizes—this is the direct reason for replacing the lens—while preserving full lens-shift capability so the image can still be aligned after the adjustment.
IV. Three Checks Before Replacement
- Verify the panel dimensions. Panel specifications for this model are not yet included, so please send us a photo of the projector nameplate for verification.
- Check the interfaces and locking mechanism. Interfaces are generally compatible within the same platform generation, but the position of the locking latch differs between generations. If the image appears skewed or the edges remain soft after installation, the lock is usually not fully engaged rather than the lens itself being faulty.
- Factor the lens-shift margin into the installation. The shift range provides installation leeway, but edge image quality degrades when it is pushed to the limits; in practice, keep actual use within 70% of the specified value.
For models not listed, it is safer to send us the projector nameplate and a photo of the original lens for verification—same-generation platforms often share interfaces, but the risk of ordering based on a similar model designation is not worth taking.
