VPLL-Z3009 is a short-throw lens for Sony engineering projectors, with a 0.85–1:1 throw ratio. It is compatible with 16 models across 1 model series. This guide presents the lens specifications, installation distances, model compatibility list, and replacement considerations all in one place.

2. Calculating Installation Distance from Throw Ratio
The throw ratio is the ratio of the installation distance to the image width. This lens has a zoom range of 0.85–1:1, so each image size corresponds to a range of installation distances. It can focus at any distance within that range.
| Image Size | Image Width | Required Installation Distance |
|---|---|---|
| 100 inches | 2.15 m | Approx. 1.83 – 2.15 m |
| 120 inches | 2.58 m | Approx. 2.19 – 2.58 m |
| 150 inches | 3.22 m | Approx. 2.74 – 3.22 m |
| 200 inches | 4.30 m | Approx. 3.65 – 4.30 m |
The distances above are the clear distances from the front lens element to the projection screen and do not include space for rear cooling or cable connections. They are calculated for a 16:10 image aspect ratio; actual distances should be verified through on-site measurement and against the manual.
Image quality varies at the two ends of the zoom range: the image is brighter with slightly softer edges toward the short-throw end; toward the long-throw end, the edges are sharper and brightness is slightly lower. Where site conditions allow, use the middle of the range. After installation, first find the sharpest position using the focus ring, then fine-tune the lens shift—adjusting both at once makes precise alignment difficult.

The zoom ratio is the zoom factor of the standard lens supplied with that model (upper limit ÷ lower limit of the original throw-ratio range), not the zoom range of the lens featured in this article.
Common Characteristics of These Models
The factory-supplied standard lenses for these 16 models generally have throw ratios ranging from 1.39:1-2.23:1. The VPLL-Z3009 discussed here changes the focal range, allowing different image sizes at the same projection distance—this is the direct reason for replacing the lens. It also retains full lens-shift capability, so the image can still be aligned after adjusting the focal range.
4. Three Checks Before Replacement
- Check the panel dimensions. Panel specifications for this model are not yet available in our database. Please send us a photo of the projector nameplate for verification.
- Confirm the interface and locking mechanism. Interfaces are generally compatible across the same platform generation, but the locking latch position varies by generation. If the image is skewed or the edges are not sharp after installation, the latch is usually not fully engaged rather than the lens itself being faulty.
- Allow extra zoom margin. When measuring the installation distance, allow an additional 10–20 cm beyond the range endpoints, as transportation and installation variations may cause the lens to fall outside the range.
For models not on the list, the safest approach is to send us photos of the projector nameplate and original lens for verification. Models from the same platform generation often share the same interfaces, but the risks of ordering based on a similar model designation are not worth taking.
